Why Topographical Practice Matters

Most new PHV driver applicants in London must pass both the SERU assessment and the Topographical Skills Assessment before TfL will issue a licence. The Topographical test checks that you can read a map, plan a sensible route and navigate without relying entirely on sat-nav — essential when working without signal or in an emergency.

Route planning is the single largest component of the real test. Practising on an actual, real-world map — rather than abstract diagrams — builds genuine spatial awareness of how London's roads connect, which is exactly the skill the assessment is designed to check.
